A modern take on the famous folk tale, Bawang Merah-Bawang Putih (Shallots & Garlic). Alya (Bawang Putih) and Siska (Bawang Merah) are neighbors who go to the same high school. Alya grew up in a rich family and lived happily with her parents, Yasmin and Indra. Meanwhile, Siska, who was considered the closest neighbor by Alya's family, lives with her mother, Rika. They presented themselves as good people until Yasmin fell ill, they killed her when she was hospitalized as part of their scheme to seize Indra's wealth. The plan was successful as Indra later asked Rika's hand into marriage and brought her and her daughter to move into Alya's house. In front of Indra, they pretended to be a very kind and loving mother and daughter, but when Indra was away, Siska and Rika always tortured Alya.
In this sequel, the preceding romance between Rhoma and Kartika, is explored. Although Rhoma is imprisoned, Benny Compo is not satisfied with the situation, while the Rhoma’s band is in shambles. Benny’s group controls the stage with uproarious music. After his release, the conflict extends to a confrontation between two musical genres. Both bands decide to have a duel on one stage. Rhoma takes six songs, while Ikang Fawzi sings two songs.
For disturbing public order, a group of breakdancing teenagers are arrested by the police. Hence, Chicha’s father forbids her to breakdance and Chicha’s boyfriend, Rico, is asked to go his own way. Then parents and teenagers meet to discuss the issue. Chicha continues to breakdance and is even planning a show with her friends. Initially, her father opposes this but finally changes his mind after he sees the successful show. Almost half of the film consists of breakdancing scenes that were popular and polemical in the news at that time.
Iwan, a high school student, loses his bajaj-driver father because the jeep of Dance Lintang, a famous singer, runs him down. Iwan’s pregnant mother has to work hard. Iwan has been singing on the streets for money, and now he gets help from his younger siblings who sell newspapers. But his mother passes away when she gives birth to her last child so Iwan vows to raise his siblings. But when he cannot afford it, he puts his siblings in the orphanage. Then when his girlfriend Tia yells at him for doing that, he instinctively runs off with his siblings. He is imprisoned as a result but a journalist, Miftah, who knows his talent, bails him out. Iwan decides to quit school and Miftah manages to record him. Dance is furious when he hears that Iwan is making a record. He approaches the producer and destroys the recording tape. Then Dance gets arrested for narcotics while Iwan’s record is a major hit, so he brings his siblings home from the orphanage.
Pras has almost finished college, has rich parents and a beautiful, faithful fiancee but is suddenly diagnosed with lung cancer. He only has six months left to live. Pras’ parents ask Tika’s parents to allow them to marry. Tika, who is very much in love with Pras, agrees although her parents oppose. Pras takes Tika to live in the fishermen’s village. He wants to contribute to the village. Tika hides her pregnancy although Pras is aware and pretends not to know. Death finally comes but Tika is relieved as Pras has enjoyed his life.
Del’s mother opposes her romance with Iyan, especially when she also gets pregnant.
