The social ferment in late 19th century Russia which led to the 1917 Russian Revolution is movingly portrayed in this lengthy historical drama, which is very faithful to the 1907 novel The Mother by the celebrated Marxist writer Maxim Gorky (1868-1936). In the story, "the mother" (Inna Tchourikova) has no other recourse than to watch her decent, kindly husband turn into an animalistic, drunken brute as a result of working in the inhuman conditions of a steel mill in the town of Sormovo. When he begins to express his suppressed rage by beating her, she is defended by her teenaged son Pavel (depicted Viktor Rakov as an adult, Sacha Chichonok as a boy). After his father's death, Pavel is forced to go to work in the same factory. However, Pavel and his friends begin investigating Marxism and socialist thought, and work to organize their fellow workers.

During the war, the Nazis took the breeding horse Zarnitsa, winner of many international races, to Germany. But the horse refused to obey its new owner, jockey Shoiberg. Therefore, he was forced to release from captivity stableman Grigory, who took care of Zarnitsa before the war. Taking advantage of the situation, the stableman tried to escape and died. And Scheuberg decided to ride Zarnitsa after all, but at the finish line she threw off her rider and ran away. She was found and returned to her owner, and despite this, she tried many times to escape from captivity. Only at the very end of the war she was found by the stableman's son Lenka....
The film is dedicated to Dmitry Ilyich Ulyanov, the younger brother of V.I. Lenin, a professional revolutionary, doctor and creator of the first Soviet sanatoriums and rest homes in the Crimea.

Закончил английскую спецшколу. В школе получил кличку «Бешеный», так как, несмотря на маленький рост, мог вступить в схватку с любым обидчиком. В 1974 году, продолжая учёбу в десятом классе, в тайне от родителей поступил вольнослушателем ВГИКа в актёрскую мастерскую С. Бондарчука. Закончив школу, продолжил стационарное обучение на актёрском отделении, тогда же впервые снялся в кино в фильме «Это мы не проходили». Не прерывая обучения в институте, активно снимался в кино, пропускал занятия, за что был представлен к отчислению. Спас Ростоцкого приз, полученный им на ВГИКовском фестивале за роль Мити Красикова в фильме «Это мы не проходили». В фильме Сергея Бондарчука «Они сражались за Родину» исполнил свой первый трюк (его герой погибает под танком), до сих пор этот трюк никто не повторил. Служил в Советской Армии (1978-1980). Военную службу проходил в Отдельном кавалерийском полку на коне Рекорд, с которым выиграл полковые соревнования, посвящённые Дню Победы. Этот конь был «партнёром» Андрея на съёмках фильма «Конец императора тайги». Во время службы в армии Ростоцкий снялся в фильме «Эскадрон гусар летучих». В этом фильме актёр снимался бесплатно, т. к. был приписан к съёмкам рядовым кавалерийского полка
